God ~ By JC Calkins

The only thing which the great and obvious weight of our sins should reveal to us and others is the magnitude of God’s forgiveness. God weighs our love for Him on the exact same scale upon which He weighs our wrongdoings. That’s an incredibly valuable piece of information as long as it’s deposited along with our unconditional and unrelenting love for God. The former without the latter, is like a deciduous tree in the winter, dormant, sleeping, unable to produce any good fruit. It’s the “Son“, the warm “Light” and the “Living Water of Love” which returns us to our productive, valued state of being. Love is like a fountain which flows from two springs, for without the second spring, it’s merely a trickle of admiration, a splash of hope, a dew drop lost to the heat of the day. Love combines the essence of lives, into a single, indistinguishable body of clarity. This is how our oneness with God should be viewed, not as two rivers fighting each other but a single refreshing, combined shower falling gently on everything and everyone around us. Jesus epitomized this love, exemplified by the sinner who washed his feet with her tears and then dried them with her hair. Her sins were many but her love, when combined with that of our Lord washed them away, like the earthly residue on His feet.  Addressing this simple, selfless act of loving admiration; “Then Jesus said to her, Your sins are forgiven.'” (Luke 7:48 NIV).

So often caught in the riptides of life, we feel the weight of our own behaviors and thoughts, actions and utterances, pulling us away from God. Our spontaneous reaction is to return to the same shore, the same blind perspectives which allowed us, even encouraged us, to enter the treacherous waters, time and again. That, more often than not, results with drowning in our own confusion. When we give back through devotion, the life which our creator gifted to us, everything changes. God lifts us from the destructive tides, the storming surges, the oppressive winds and guides us along the path which was originally marked for us. He lifts us out of the troubles and allows us to view and navigate them from His eternal perspective. He reminds us that the worst that can happen to us now, is to leave this life and join Him in a better one. He knows what lies on the other side of death, He lives there in the most desirable of surroundings. Without God we have EVERYTHING to lose, with God we have NOTHING to lose. Regardless of our rap sheets, unauthorized travels and dubious choices, when we willingly lay everything out at our Lord’s well traveled feet, bleed our own tears of regret and profess undying love to the purest most forgiving heart ever, all of lasting value will be well. This, above all else, is what God offers us. God is LOVE.

As good people, or Christians, or others of merit and conscience, we’ve probably accepted that giving is a part of life. Extending the reach of that giving takes several extra steps and is equally rewarding, most of the time. But what about the “takers“? Those of reasonably good health and capability who take but never offer or give anything back to anyone? For the most part the holy bible (God) is silent on them. Jesus advised; just give more, turn… read more

Appealing Character ~ By JC Calkins

The things of life which hurt us most severely are often the same as those which ultimately offer to help us to grow essentially. Character might well be the most underrated of all human attributes. When we meet a person of good and strong character we are much more inclined to be tolerant of their many other quirks and blemishes, because we value the moments of dependable character more than we are offended by their momentary absences or overshadows. Amidst… read more

Love Prevails ~ JC Calkins

When love, the foundation of good is lost, there is nothing left equal to the power of evil, nothing to balance the scales and the scales are important. Love follows rules, evil doesn’t. Love gives selflessly while evil takes selfishly. Love rarely pursues evil, yet evil relentlessly pursues and seeks to destroy love. Evil thrives on suffering while love thrives on peace. Yet, when love finally faces off against evil, love prevails even if casualties ensue. This is because love… read more

So Much More ~ JC Calkins

We’ve all seen video of an approaching tsunami, or an avalanche racing toward a village of humanity, even a tornado twisting our safe havens into scattered debris. It’s pretty clear that even those most adept at planning and preparation, can’t outrun certain disasters, old age or disease … but we do have power or at least we could have power. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,… read more

Remarkable Advice ~ By JC Calkins

For those who’ve been raised outside of the influences of The Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the following scripture may sound odd, even preposterous, but never blasphemous. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (Philippians 2:3, 4 NIV). Do nothing? From the moment we awaken, our first thoughts and actions are generally about ourselves. I… read more

Colorful Confusion ~ by JC Calkins

History certainly repeats itself, which is not our God at work, but a chronicle of populations who’ve refused to learn from history. Our wants for better times blind us to the realities of current and past times. How often have we shaken our heads at the lesser creatures, finding amusement in their apparent inability to learn the simplest of lessons? Their naive willingness to repeat the same behaviors, to memorialize dysfunctional mistakes? They keep doing the same things but expecting… read more

If I go to church every week and you choose not to go at all, am I any better than you? If I study the bible every day and you’ve never read it at all, does that make me a better person or Christian than you? There is an easy answer to these questions but in reality there isn’t enough information in the questions to offer an accurate answer. On the surface there are two answers ~ no and no…. read more

Trinity ~ JC Calkins

The simplest way for me to try and understand The Holy Trinity, is to analogize three fingers of one hand. Each finger is distinct, unique, yet all 3 work in unison as parts of the same hand. A single finger does not function independently. This analogy is of course inadequate, because a hand has no consciousness of it’s own. The hand is subjected to the nature of the being. With God, this would be the Divine Nature. We’ve chosen to… read more

“You do what you can. We do what we can” … or do we? There is great pain and suffering in this world, in virtually ever crack, crevice and circumstance of this life. We try not to focus on that or even give it a second thought, but such avoidance in no way relieves any of that pain or suffering, in fact in many ways it allows it to worsen.  We each have our own personal allocation of grief and… read more
