Duties Unfulfilled ~ JC Calkins

Posted: August 27th, 2013 | Category: Christ Follower, Inspirational, Political, Spirituality | Comments

We believe in God, yet we must obey those who do not, so are we not, in our obedience, going against the will of God? “That is also why you pay taxes, because the authorities are working for God when they fulfill their duties.” (Romans 13:6 GNT). There’s a problem with governments which Do Not fulfill their duties according to God. It begins when we relegate others to interview potential government leaders, to ask them the questions which they feel we might want the answers to. But what happens when their agnostic questions relate only to matters which totally ignore God? Or go directly against the stated will of God? How can we really know anything about those people answering, who propose to represent our interests, which are even more importantly the interests of God? What about those who make the laws, set the budgets, appropriate funds and interfere by filibuster with the duties prescribed to them? What about those who are appointed to set policy, judge the laws, uphold or strike down the laws without any concern for the true Maker of Laws who is also the Final Judge of life compliance and obedience? It’s clear that in a democracy, a single position of power does not, by design, constitute any form leadership. Leadership comes from above and from those who recognize the ultimate power of the above. Some degree of authority exists in democratic governments, but leadership, no. Democracies necessarily have a separation or division of power to limit the potential damages, which are inherent to poor leadership. However, when virtually all of the carefully divided branches of power ignore the laws of the universe or the will of God, only one thing is assured and has been evidenced by history, the eventual collapse of that government. “Everyone must obey state authorities, because no authority exists without God’s permission, and the existing authorities have been put there by God.” (Romans 13:1 GNT). God has allowed so many governments to exist as a slow and painful method of teaching His children the consequences of their neglect, their disobedience and their wayward pursuits. When God alone is convinced that the hard lessons have been felt, He starts again, a pattern which has been repeated over all millennia.

Some of us may live to see this eventual outcome, but many will pass on, with the regretted legacy that their children and grandchildren will pay the ultimate price of their actions or inactions. How comfortable are we with our last will and testaments beginning with: “Being of sound mind and failing body, we leave 100% of the results of our spiritual neglect, disobedience and wayward pursuits to our beloved children, grandchildren and closest friends“? “Jesus said to them, “You are the ones who make yourselves look right in other people’s sight, but God knows your hearts. For the things that are considered of great value by people are worth nothing in God’s sight.” (Luke 16:15 GNT).  Believing the message of God includes speaking, sharing and living the message of God. When we are silent, passive or complacent about our beliefs and our governments, our legacy is that of condemning those we love most dearly to the worst of times, not a better future. If we elect or allow Godless people to rule, many will pay the ultimate price of a Godless government. Change the people and we’ll change the system.

Love A Good Mystery? ~ JC Calkins

If our lives are one dimensional, out of control or a confusing composite of misplaced energy, regardless of causation, then it’s also likely that God is somewhat of a mystery to us. If God is still in any way, a mystery to any of us, then it’s our own fault. God has gone to great lengths to reveal himself to us, to make us aware of His wants, druthers, compassion and patience. Unlike many other beings in our world, God… read more

Everything To Me ~ JC Calkins

Our world is not everything, it’s a place. It’s an elaborate table which has been set before us and others. We believe, that because God created this “good” world and the heavens within which it drifts, that God must indeed love it. Yet, our God says to us: “Do not love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you do not love the Father.” (1 John 2:15 GNT). These are not the words… read more

Ready or Not ~ JC Calkins

“Their greed is never satisfied.” (Job 20:20 GNT). When we first read words like this, we think of others. The list of probables and candidates goes on and on. Almost any person can point a full hand of fingers at those who’s obvious interests are of self before all else. Those who have never been hungry for more than a day do not really know hunger. Those who have not been homeless, with no place to rest or sleep can… read more

Truth or Myth ~ JC Calkins

In some cases the man is real but the myth prevails over the man himself. In the early 1500’s, the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León and his crew were the first recorded Europeans to set foot on Florida, in the yet to be, nation of America. Legend tells us that they made this discovery while searching for the Fountain of Youth, a mystical water source proposed to be capable of halting or reversing the aging process and curing sickness…. read more

Who made you? ~ JC Calkins

Except for those who’ve won the lottery or some other gift horse, most tend to take credit for their achievements and their accumulated possessions. We paid the price of our success … right? Lot’s of extra and often expensive schooling, years or even decades of extra long hours, sweat, no vacations, holding off on starting family until success has weighed in, gambling on our debt assumptions. We deserve whatever … … whatever we have. Right? Well not according to our… read more

Secrets ~ JC Calkins

Posted: August 18th, 2013 | Category: Christ Follower, Inspirational, Spirituality | Comments

There are half-truths and whole-truths, little secrets and big secrets or at least this is how WE  choose to see the world. God has kept secrets from us too or perhaps more accurately, from some of us: “You should think of us as Christ’s servants, who have been put in charge of God’s secret truths.” (1 Corinthians 4:1 GNT). So how are we to act? Are secrets bad or good or is it the purpose behind our secrets which we… read more

The Fields of Life ~ JC Calkins

As the days fade off into darkness, earlier than yesterday and the crops of the fields ripen, the harvest plans begin. Everything about life is painted onto the calendar of this very same portrait. The seed, it’s germination, growth, blossom, maturity and harvest, the most constantly repeated cycle of life for all living things. Two conversations captivated my thoughts this week. One dealt with the farmers family, busy tending to the roadside stand of their family’s farm. They were laying… read more

Call The Wind ~ JC Calkins

Posted: August 14th, 2013 | Category: Christ Follower, Inspirational, Spirituality | Comments

Is the breeze a child of the wind or is it the wind itself holding back some of it’s power? A breeze is generally refreshing and enjoyable while the wind in full force invokes true fear and awe, something we should truly respect to survive. They are essentially the same but in different doses. The welcomed dose and the punishing dose. We try to build our homes and lives to withstand the harshest wind yet we add in windows and… read more

New Realities ~ JC Calkins

Posted: August 13th, 2013 | Category: Christ Follower, Inspirational, Spirituality | Comments

Repent is not a word found in present conversations, current literature or even our real world courtrooms anymore, which makes me wonder about the conscience of the mind. Have we evolved so perfectly and polished that we needn’t ever regret our missteps? Do we simply move on now, ignoring the tear washed damages left in our wakes? Do we still live in the real world at all or have we gravitated over to the fantasies of fiction, propaganda, marketing venues,… read more
