Wow instead of Huh ~ JC Calkins

Wow instead of Huh ~ JC Calkins

Hey I saw a great house the other day, I really want that house! This statement or thought alone is probably not going to get anyone that house. If however, that same statement was made to the owner of the house, AND the owner wanted to sell, rent, share or donate the house, then possibilities start to exist. “People cannot come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me; and I will raise them to life on the last day. The prophets wrote, ‘Everyone will be taught by God.’ Anyone who hears the Father and learns from him comes to me.” (John 6:44, 45 GNT). Just reading the recorded Words of Jesus too often results in a confusing … Huh? … accompanied by a shaking of the head to try and clarify the meaning. It’s meaning is similar to the house statement above. Here’s another confusing statement I’ve made, which when understood begins to clarify the scripture quoted here. It’s less about seeking than it is about receiving. Beginning with the last sentence, let’s untangle it. Anyone who hears the Father and learns from Him comes to me. God does speak to us through His Holy Spirit. In fact God does this more than most of us know. More often than not, we think that any good or great ideas that we’ve had just (somehow creatively) originated in our own minds. That makes most of us feel good. For me, it took getting to know the real source separately before I could connect that source to those ideas and then properly attribute the wisdom (or good idea) where it belonged, to God. Once the voice of God is distinguished from all of the other silent chatter in our minds, everything past and present which we’ve experienced starts to make sense. Then we start uttering the word … Wow instead of Huh! .

Jesus gave all of us the Holy Spirit, but He apparently didn’t slap us soundly upside-the-head with the source-code to immediately hear the Spirit. That’s where it’s more about receiving than seeking. God wants to start or grow relationship with us, on His terms, not ours. Our terms have never worked out for us, so this actually makes perfect sense. It begins with opening our hearts to God and then listening patiently. Once we hear something profoundly good and revealing, which we can’t attribute to experience, education or knowledge, then we need to ID and mentally imprint that voice for future reference. Remember, “good” is always consistent with God’s Will and Word. Always! No exceptions! With that voice now ID’d, we are then “drawn” to Jesus. Drawn is a dramatically descriptive term, because that’s also where we’ll find God and the Holy Spirit. We are not pushed, shoved, led or sent to Jesus, we drawn to the Holy Trinity, which we’ll find waiting within us. Everyone will be taught by God, then makes perfect sense. We are not God, we are a temple for God. Finding Jesus without God’s active assistance really isn’t possible. This is an elaborate way of saying, forget who you think God is and just open the door to His truth. Receive Jesus. Then grow and love like you’ve never done before. That’s how we’ll find our place in God’s shared house, that perfect dwelling we keep glimpsing in our peripheral vision.

Borrowing Awareness ~ JC Calkins

Whether it came directly out of your mouth, or that of a fellow student, nearly everybody in high school has heard the question, “So what do we need to know for the test?“. With that in mind, there is something which I think requires some additional attention. Recently, I quoted this particular Bible verse, in response to a posed question, which was then followed by another question. This scripture is from the parable of the virgins. “Afterward the other virgins… read more

Welcome To Heaven ~ JC Calkins

Do you think that heaven is a faraway, other dimensional place? I don’t. I believe that heaven is simply the name that we’ve assigned to both the spiritual and manifest presence of God in our lives. The presence which far too many of us fail to recognize. I understand that this might not necessarily agree with modern perceptions, however I absolutely know that it is consistent with what God, through the Bible, tells us. The question which I’d, for so… read more

Jesus has a great story. He’s had this story written for a very long time, even before He had a set and the cast to play it out. It’s not His story alone, for it was conceived in Trinity. Jesus however is the Director and Leading Man  in charge of pulling it all together. Yesterday I wrote about us (the players and walk-on’s) not really knowing the Who’s Who in this story or the overall run time for this epic… read more

Foolish Message? ~ JC Calkins

Do you hear and hope to avoid; Don’t bother me? What’s the fuss all about? The whole Christian thing … it’s not my thing, that’s your thing, I’m good!! Is it really? “For God in his wisdom made it impossible for people to know him by means of their own wisdom. Instead, by means of the so-called “foolish” message we preach, God decided to save those who believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:21 GNT). The Apostle Paul gave us a lot of… read more

They listened. You’re listening! THAT pleases One more than you can know!! FOR, when we listen, we learn. When we learn, we begin to understand. When we begin to understand, we start to know. When we know intimately, we fall in love. When we love we see, serve, sacrifice and surrender for that love. The difference, starts with listening … directly to God. Adam, Moses, Noah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Abram (Abraham), the Apostles etc., etc., etc. all have one thing in… read more

While we sleep, work or pray, miracles happen. But who, why and how? “Suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:13, 14 GNT). Even in the midst of such miracles, we often think and wonder, why him or her or me? What was done to deserve this? How can this happen? These questions… read more

Home For Christmas ~ JC Calkins

Whoever said that you can’t ever go home again, really had a limited understanding of the possible. “This very day in David’s town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord! And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:11, 12 GNT). Going home again is ingrained in us, in the deepest, ancient part of us, which sees clearly beyond the limitations of this world. There has… read more

Leaving None Behind ~ JC Calkins

There is only one word in any language which even remotely draws near to the power of LOVE. It is the antithesis to love. Where love is the motivation for life itself and for all things good which come to us, it’s destructive counterpart has the potential to unravel all purpose, strength and meaning. We might willingly offer our lives in love, while the other emotion unwittingly consumes or waste us and other lives, because love has been allowed to… read more

Being a part time Christian, leaves us being something else altogether the rest of the time. We really can’t do or be that effectively, because the rest of the time, is of course, most of the time. The Sabbath, whether you recognize it as Saturday or Sunday, is just 1 out of 7 days or 14.3% of the time, leaving us spiritually naked the remaining 85.7% of the time. Still, most expect or secretly hope, that’s enough. When that day… read more
