Responsibility or Love? ~ JC Calkins

Responsibility or Love ~ JC Calkins

It’s true that storms can awaken our vulnerabilities, promote fear and caution us to seek shelter. Yet every storm presents a different threat, a unique challenge and our same natural reaction to each storm can place us at even greater risk. Seeking shelter in an earthquake may be as hazardous as fleeing a blizzard on foot. Our first natural reactions are born out of fear and experience, not out of wisdom, except for those who have entrusted their safety unto God. Why must our storms come before our wisdom? The answer is in our altered nature. A nature which was first seduced by sin and then left to wander the endless storms, in this land of selfish pursuits. The storms are interruptions, warning signs and in the saddest cases, judgements. It is rarely the first storm which defeats us, more likely the last. Life is overflowing with storms of every size, shape and makeup, some we can tolerate, others we escape or survive, but we still struggle to understand that we will all face one great storm in this life. There has always been just one voice in all the universe to quiet that final storm. “Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (Mark 4:39, 40 NKJV). That question rings out as loud and true today as it did 1,982 years ago, when first recorded.

We live more of our lives out of a sense of responsibility than we do out of love. Responsibility flows out of our life reservoir draining us, while love is an inflow of pure, refreshing, life sustaining water. Have you ever tried to flush a toilet, 2 or 3 times in a row without allowing it to refill? It simply doesn’t work! The contents of this metaphoric toilet are like the parts our lives that are unpleasant. God moves differently than most of us, He operates out of love. Even with life’s unpleasantries. The intensity of our storms will continue to increase until our attention is turned fully toward God. When that occurs, He calms our storms. That may not alter the conditions of our lives, but it alters our reactions and futures. With God on our side, through faith, no experience is necessary. Wisdom rules and our fears are are made still. God pours out love to His faithful, refilling our reservoirs and allowing us to be responsible. God doesn’t demand responsibility, He displays, enables and fuels it. With God refilling our life tanks, we’ll never (ever) run out of water. These storms are simply warnings, our reminders that there is only one life shelter which can cover every storm. Look for the sign which points to Jesus and turn toward Him today.

Nation In Need ~ JC Calkins

As I gaze upon this nation, my feelings are restless. My heart laughs with the discovery struggles of our toddlers but winces as I glimpse their next steps and futures. The love that so many parents express at home, is tucked away as they step out into their working world each day. God may be known to us but not welcomed, needed but not respected, relied upon but not adored. This does not sit upright in either faith or reason…. read more

Mission Message ~ JC Calkins

Turning God’s thoughts and words into our own thoughts and words is the whole point of the impartation (on us) of the Holy Spirit. Justifying our own thoughts, words and ways without abiding with God’s teachings is the road which has led us to ruin, generation after generation. This sounds like a macro-spiritual concept but the applications are clear and unambiguous in our every-day lives. We must first check ourselves for consistency with God. If after completing that assessment, we… read more

Casting Off ~ JC Calkins

It’s up to you! Take control of your own life! You’re the master of your own destiny! You know what’s best! You’ve ascended to king on the throne of your kingdom! To whatever extent that we believe any of these earthly statements, the very same degree of our belief in Jesus Christ is erased from our measure of faith. Just like that, the bridge which Jesus so painfully erected for us from the cross, spanning over the valley of death,… read more

Natural? ~ JC Calkins

There is a critical point of faith which for some requires some clarification. As usual we’ll use the truth of Scripture to provide the necessary understanding. Jesus Christ laid the foundation for receiving God’s Holy Spirit here on earth, to teach and guide us in His ways. The Holy Spirit was poured out for all of humanity, there are no exceptions. That does not mean that everyone walking around here has the Holy Spirit within them. Many never discover the… read more

Before We Do ~ JC Calkins

From our earliest memories we may be able to recall just how often or much we sought the recognition and approval of our families, guardians, friends and teachers, for it is our nature that we want to do well. We’re not always able to but we want to. Pleasing others is a natural pursuit. This continues on until we are adolescents and then adults. At some point in-between we begin to please ourselves, as much, if not more often than… read more

I begin each day by asking, “God, what is that you’d like me to think and write about today?” Within this short question lies my presumption that God already knows who needs to hear something from Him, which He’s been trying to communicate. If you are reading, sharing or liking this article today, you may be or know someone who needs this short intro or reminder. There are times in our lives when we need to flush the perceptions which… read more

The Voice Of Love ~ JC Calkins

At times it seems that I might never exhaust writing about the benefits associated with hearing God’s voice. That’s because what God has to offer to us (individually and corporately), has no limitations. I started hearing God’s voice long before I recognized it AS God’s voice, a chronology which has certain danger’s built in. The first is the naive or foolish willingness to disregard the counsel being offered. Those consequences I learned the hard way. The second is our human… read more

Life has always been about relationships. Relationships require something of common need or interests. Sexual desires and propagation are not common interests, they are temporary desires of the body. Wealth is not a common interest, it’s a desire of status, prestige, perceived freedom and comfort. A life built on or around desires is guaranteed to be an unhappy life, because our latent, intrinsic needs are never fulfilled or satisfied. Love is the most deeply seated, emotionally centered, priority need in… read more

There’s much which we can’t explain. I’m not writing about String Theory Physics, Genetic Reengineering or Time/Space Continuums here, there is always an abundance of educated people who can explain that kind of stuff. I’m talking about just … knowing … something. Something that we really shouldn’t be able to know, which doesn’t come from knowledge, experience or even instincts which are simply fixed patterns of behavior. Intuition is one of the more commonly accepted words which we use to… read more
