Live Right ~ JC Calkins

It’s easy to become confused about God’s Will for us, from simply reading His story in the bible. The characters we are presented with are examples and these examples are picked to reflect the best or the worst of us, to make certain points. Most of us however are neither the best nor the worst, we are not overly righteous nor purely evil. We are, spiritually speaking, average in the eyes of the world. Not in God’s eye’s mind you, for God’s love makes each of us uniquely precious. God never intended for the average among us to be full time preachers, pastors or priests. He doesn’t expect most of us to stand on city street corners with religious proclamations or wander through the jungles and wilds searching for those who’ve never even heard of Him. Or try to open their innocent or savage eyes. Evangelism for most is not a vocation, it’s a testimony of opportunity. God presents us with the opportunities and we provide the testimony. What God does expect from each of His, is that we routinely live the life that He has saved, for the reasons He saved it. Not proclaim it, not write about it, not teach it, but to display, through our everyday actions and obedience, what He is continually teaching us. That’s what God wants from each of us.

The burdens of “am I doing enough?” are not God’s challenges, they are not from a judgmental Holy Spirit’s tenacious gut punches. They are the subconscious result of us not living as we know that God has willed us to. If we’re up to feeding the hungry, housing the homeless or serving our prison’s populations, so be it, but not in exchange for living the sort of life which God would otherwise frown upon. When God presents an opportunity, He may not even tell us, He might simply EXPECT that we will exemplify the family which He has raised up from sinner to server. Testimony doesn’t always present as words, testimony more effectively presents as examples, just like in the bible. Subtle, persistent, reliable examples of Godliness, like His Son Jesus, our role model. Jesus always acted right. He taught His disciples, but equally as important, He exemplified His teachings. Jesus didn’t always refer to His Father, but He always acted like His Father. His every other word was not God, God, but His every visible and audible testimony was God like. His message of action is crystal clear, “for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ” (Matthew 23:39 NKJV). This powerful statement includes one often overlooked word, one critical instruction, one life example of not just our Blessed Teacher Himself, but of His prospective students, His future brides “… comes …” !  Not one who simply speaks or writes, but who acts in the likeness and personification of the One whom we profess to follow. Jesus exemplified Godliness, He rebelliously (in this world) lived the Father’s teachings. He didn’t wear a wooden cross, He carried the whole tree. He did much more than simply claim His divine heritage, He lived it, which testified for it, every minute of every day. That’s our heritage and legacy too, that is our daily assignment. Live right.

A Tiny Acorn ~ JC Calkins

There is more to this life we’ve been offered than to simply uphold or obey commandments. We have laws covering much of that and for most of us, the rest should be a matter of common sense. God’s point of focus for us is much more in-line with our great potential. We have continuous opportunities to be very special, both to each other and in God’s eyes. We must simply grasp these nondescript opportunities. “Do not neglect the gift that… read more

Always Believe ~ JC Calkins

I must begin this way to get to the more pivotal point of this message. What do you think, {believe The Word of God} means? We know from John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (NKJV) … that Jesus is the Word of God, translated from the Greek word “logos”. I’ve always found it interesting that God (through John) chose that particular word, to effectively span the distances… read more

Chosen Blindness ~ JC Calkins

Chosen blindness is very different than physical blindness. We have unconsciously developed our seemingly inherent ability to not see in ourselves that which is so obvious to other casual observers. This could probably be called conscious denial, but we should remember that God sees everything about us exactly the way it is, in full context, with no filters, shadows, spotlights and certainly no bias. We are so busy living and justifying our ways of life, that there is no time… read more

Rules; Breaker or Follower? ~ JC Calkins

There is no distinct visible barrier between rule breakers and followers. We can’t just look at someone and determine their inclinations, like which side of that particular fence they’ve chosen to live or trespass on. We’d have to hang out with them for awhile to test that out. The problem is that we’re all judges to some degree, who accept rules as long as they work in our favor. It’s when these very same rules start interfering or blocking our… read more

More Than Time ~ JC Calkins

Fear comes in many forms to cripple us. Fear comes from not having any hope. Not having any or adequate hope comes from not knowing our Lord Jesus. The most that we have to lose in this world, the one thing which was created just for us, is time.  Our tangible time, to be spent with each other, to know of this physical world, which we can experience with or without God by our side. God gives us that, in… read more

I didn’t start out believing in God. No, that’s not a blasphemous, heretical, sacrilegious, atheistic statement and it’s not really agnosticism. All of us start out not believing in anything at all and then over time, we grow to believe in what our senses can readily confirm via infant; yum and yuck truth tests. Some continue to navigate life entirely in this way, but most are eventually persuaded to accept some other principles or concepts, which can’t be strictly confirmed…. read more

Gather The Good ~ JC Calkins

How can such a good and all powerful God let such bad things happen to good people? This question, more than any other, lies beneath the chronic degree of unbelief so prevalent throughout our societies.  Every mature being has at least some experience with bad things, tragic events, pained memories or pervasive sorrow. We might attempt to sweep out the memories and move beyond the echoes of such events to make objective assessments, but there is no broom capable of… read more

The Hidden Staircase ~ JC Calkins

When we’re feeling overwhelmed, lost, trapped or rejected, think about a hidden staircase. One where each subsequent step moves us more toward freedom and overcoming everything holding us down. One step alone won’t get us where we want to be, but each step up  has purpose and is absolutely necessary. The order we take the steps in is important too, otherwise we’ll skip some and slide or fall backwards a few times, keeping us from our objective even longer. The… read more

We Did Not ~ JC Calkins

“He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” A lot of different figures might pop into our minds as we read this description, people we’ve known, seen, turned our backs on or ignored.  People who have inadvertently opened the doors of our minds to the unwelcome guilt of shame, pity or even disgust. Even… read more
