The Puzzle ~ JC Calkins

Jigsaw

From a much better vantage point, likening our lives to a jigsaw puzzle is a revealing analogy. God gazes upon the finished package long before it’s ever been delivered to us. He knows what the completed picture of our lives, each apart and then all together, looks like. It’s the assembly and rearranging of those lives which is so interesting. We get our lives laid out before us, and we select one little puzzle piece at a time. As we travel through life, we are challenged to assemble the pieces, often trying to force pieces together which don’t fit (perfectly). We try and imagine the evolving image through our momentary glimpses and futuristic reflections. With no downside immediately evident to us, the choices are mind boggling. We start with the outer edges and work inward. Each piece has a very specific relationship with the adjoining pieces, but sometimes appearing more relational than they were meant to be. The pieces are also jig-sewn pieces of time. Tiny portraits in and of themselves, yet parts of a bigger picture, a more complete and important picture. This isn’t a 500, 5,000 or even a 10,000 piece puzzle, it has millions upon millions of moving, multidimensional pieces. Alone, we’ll probably never get it all right, at least not before the time allotted, runs out for us.

God already knows what the completed picture looks like and what it reflects. He wants to help, but not with little changes, not with just the colors, edges or sectional details. He wants the whole puzzle finished for good, just the way He created it. For that to actually happen, we need to give the whole puzzle back to God. He’ll totally disassemble everything we did, bury all of the mistakes and the wrongfully pursued accomplishments and then begin again, new. God never loses any of His original pieces. Yes, we are the puzzle. God doesn’t start rebuilding us with the simplicity of the edges when He works, He doesn’t care about the outer edges all that much, they are already obvious enough and not nearly as determinant for His purposes. He starts inside, right in the spiritual middle of the puzzle, the soul and works His way out, very slowly and carefully. God’s never in much of a rush it seems, because time isn’t all that important to Him. If it still is to us, then we need to help Him. We are what’s important to God, to be rebuilt or more appropriately, to be born again in His image. That needs to be what we want too. If we have any other purpose, it will only slow things down or possibly cause us to give up and move on with just the weaker, outer edges, assembled. God enjoys the rebuilding, the perfecting process. There was only ever one puzzle which was assembled correctly the first time. No mistakes, no missing pieces. That’s the puzzle we were told to call JESUS. God is well pleased with that perfect outcome and from all of the available tribute’s, it’s apparent that He had His hand or at least His Voice in the choice and placement of every piece, every second, of every one of those 33 earthly years. God has His reason for these life projects, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Mark 8:36 NKJV). That’s the piece which God wants so much to protect, for without that critical piece, without the soul, the puzzle will never amount to anything more than dust, in a box, scattered about or as ash lost to the wind.

Too often, listening to God is like participating in a dream. Not every part makes immediate sense. Even more often, not listing to God results in actually living out a nightmare, which also makes very little sense. I’ve never been particularly gifted at learning foreign languages. It’s simply not something which comes easily or naturally for me. Learning to recognize the voice and understand the super-natural language of God, has been an even greater challenge (at least for me) than… read more

This story has been playing out on the Broadway’s of our lives for seven thousand of our continuous years. It’s the longest running love story of all time. If ever there was a seriously uplifting and true story, this is it. This, more than any other, has won rave reviews and His people’s choice awards, from generation to countless generations. And this story’s not about to close it’s doors to those who still want to experience it.  Here’s the greatest… read more

“No” ~ JC Calkins

Jesus, our Lord and God, wasn’t always obliging. He was in-part a teacher and like any other good teacher, He said “No”, more than once. “No” in a variety of forms is part of the universal language of learning. Without a “No” every so often, expectations grow into monsters. Unnecessary monsters. Here are 3 examples. Jesus disengaged thousands of demons from a man called Legion. “And when He (Jesus) got into the boat, he (Legion) who had been demon-possessed begged… read more

Becoming a practicing Christian is not like joining the YMCA or any other type of organization or team. To the same degree, one does not develop in Christianity by merely attending the church of their choice. Christianity is more like a long apprenticeship, under the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. I’ve met many people, who believed that by joining a Christian Bible study, they would reinforce their Christian beliefs, thereby becoming a better or stronger Christian. This is… read more

While attending graduate school of business, one class received a challenging, yet revealing student assignment. To devise a practical, mathematical gambling process or system, which when uninhibited by table rules, plays, betting limits or cash flow, would always (eventually) yield positive outcomes. The first concept which we had to air out, was that of random selections. Essentially this meant a completely unpredictable series of outcomes … rolls of the dice, deal of the cards, spin of the wheel, drop of… read more

Christianity was never intended as a stand alone insurance policy. How many do you know who’ve signed up for Christianity because they felt like maybe they needed it or someone told them to, rather than, they really wanted it or better yet, just because they’d love to? Sure that eternal life offer is too good to pass up, defeating death and all that comes with it, the waiting banquet table and room prepared before us? Now picture it all again…. read more

Most of us are anxious to (learn of and) tell our own stories and some of us are even interested or polite enough to listen to other people’s stories. So why is it then that so few of us are even willing, much less interested, in hearing God’s story? It’s the greatest love story ever and the majority of our global populations have chosen to ignore it, quickly turning the pages of our own lives toward other less intriguing and… read more
