Always and Forever

We are so very inclined to be like the other creatures of this place, necessarily blending in, moving with, behaving like, in essence camouflaged by all of our surroundings, such that we can not be easily ascertained, targeted or held up to the bright lights of peer scrutiny. But that is not who we really are or were created to be. We too often choose silence, compliance, affirming postures and actions, while trying to belong, be popular, approved, accepted, loved or at least liked. Our human nature is to fit in, but many for a multitude of reasons never shall, destined instead to be always the triangular peg directed into a round hole. Some act out of cold defiance, others rejecting before they might be judged and rejected, still others who simply know that they are aliens in ANY country where they might walk, talk or live. We Christians are the “still others” shaped entirely by the 3 we love. We’ve been planted in harsh soils, choked by oppressive weeds, deprived of acceptance, soaked with intolerance, scarred by judgement, pushed toward the darkness in the back of the bus and then banished to the garbage heap by the conveyors of disbelief. Often our only comfort haven, is with each other but even that is risky because we trust. “Some people have secretly entered your group. These people are like dirty spots among you—they bring shame to you in the special meals you share together. They eat with you and have no fear. They take care of only themselves. They are like clouds without rain. The wind blows them around. They are like trees that have no fruit at harvest time and are pulled out of the ground. So they are twice dead. Like the dirty foam on the wild waves in the sea, everyone can see the shameful things they do. They are like stars that wander in the sky. A place in the blackest darkness has been kept for them forever.” (Jude 1:4a, 12-13 ERV). Yes, they are the ordinary and we are not.

We never lock our doors, because they are not our doors to even close, much less to lock. We stand ready to lend a hand, offer a shoulder, comfort a pain or explain what is obvious to us but incomprehensible to another. We withhold judgement. Yet, even in love we must be vigilant, wary and trusting in the voice of our God for guidance and direction. We are not omnipresent, omnipotent or omniscient but in a very special way, we are totally indestructibly omni-ever. This is because we are spirit, merely quartered in body and we are blessed by the only One who is Omni-everything, the One who is Always and Forever. The dirty foam from the wild waves never lasts too long, but the longer we last, wherever we are, the more opportunities we have to be, just exactly what we were created to be. We are triangular pegs for now because it’s always been in our substance and of our calling, as members of the family of the Holy 3. They tell us when it’s time to stop and time to go, time to rest or time to grow, time to serve or time to lead or when it’s just time to follow. Not because God controls us, certainly not, but because Our God loves, defends and protects us. He wants us safe in the darkness of this earth for a time, shining His homecoming beacon. We were never meant to be the ordinary or like some others, but rather like the still others. Beware, be wise and tolerant, be patient, kind and generous, be always the likeness of the One we follow and be where we are meant to be.

AND ~ JC Calkins

Following the lead of Jesus, is completely the opposite of being self-righteous. It is a solitary act of abandoning the pretense of having faith in ourselves AND putting our faith in His perfection. It involves first and foremost, the realization that we are not in any way self-made, self-sustaining or self-gratifying. As important as we may be to Jesus, He is exponentially more important to us. For without Him, we have nothing of lasting value, nothing to live for or… read more

Good writers today are taught not to construct run-on sentences, but sometimes they’re necessary. The following sentence, although complex and conjunctive, really cannot be parsed out as a series of separate thoughts or sentences. It would not carry the same, necessary, inclusive weight of descriptive, essential truths. The Apostle Paul said this about God, us and love. “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints… read more

The people who had Jesus Christ killed, may have been called Pharisees, but they were just people who disagreed with some of what Jesus said and stood for. They so disagreed with some of what He said that they felt it was necessary to end his life, to preserve their way of life. He did nothing wrong, He didn’t threaten to hurt them, He just didn’t say what they wanted to hear, so they were actively opposed to what he… read more

Every Season ~ JC Calkins

Every stage of life should offer new opportunities. We should not dwell too much in yesterday but step forward eagerly into tomorrow. This is the path that Jesus Christ has cleared for those who’ve chosen to follow Him. Our Way back when’s must be replaced with our don’t wait for tomorrow’s. With Jesus, we’ve chosen to live fully in every season, to grow and grow, much more than passively into tomorrow. “They shall still bear fruit in old age;… read more

It’s pretty obvious, that far too many have gotten way off the Godly track in life. I’ve often wondered how we drifted so far astray, since we are living in a world where God’s presence is available to each of us every day. I suspect you’ve wondered the same thing as you’ve watched others and absorbed the news. I believe that the answer to the question comes with a very simple revelation. We have the Word of God available to… read more

There is one obscure or stand alone passage in the Bible (Mark 14:51,52), which various Bible experts have presented  presumptions about in their published commentaries. Unfortunately nobody (but God) knows for sure why this obscure reference is included. I will cite two powerful verses here and then add my own differing speculation and let you decide. The question was; what else must I do to get to heaven? “So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one… read more

To avoid any and all confusion, hear Jesus, in fact hear Him doubly as recorded in two different versions of the record we call the Holy Bible. “Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” (Mark 10:15 NKJV). “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive and accept and welcome the kingdom of God like a little child [does] positively shall not enter it at… read more

On the day when Jesus forgives us, we become perfect, in His eyes. On whatever day that is or was, for each of us, we changed. If we still look the same and feel the same, I’d guess that we’re just not fully believing Him. Not believing that He could love us enough to die for us. Not believing that we’re worth the price. Not believing the total truth and infinite depth of His love. It’s simply not possible to… read more

Oil, is it the fuel of progress, the luxury of consumption or the Valdez of disaster? We think of it as technology, commerce, business as usual. Yet without our natural resources, our subject of value, there is nothing. No employment, no revenue and of course no profit. I’ve come to understand that God gives us many chances, many choices and many reminders. God has offered us His very limited approval of debt, personal or public. Yet we, who are not… read more
