Freedom ~ John C. Calkins

We have developed some strange ideas about what presents and then actually constitutes  our personal freedoms. Some think age? Others believe, financial independence? Business or home ownership? Zero commitments? Laws? Unlimited choices, resources, opportunities? In reality, each of those only tend to more securely tie us up with different kinds of knots, responsibilities and challenges. I’m going to make this next point without any exception. Until we have a permanent relationship with Jesus Christ we can never hope to be totally free. We simply can’t because death closes and locks the cell block on every other path which we might believe could lead us toward ultimate freedom  and defeating death or grasping the key to life can only be accomplished through the Grace of God. There will always be social and civic leadership in this life. Leadership which can’t be accomplished without social order, which in turn imposes rules, which further arrest rather than promote freedoms. Nothing about this life actually portrays freedom, just some move-around options within the cell block for good behavior. We are culturally, physically, educationally, emotionally, democratically and financially imprisoned in this life. Sure each personal prison is decorated differently but to some lesser or greater degree, our selected spheres of influence monitor and control us and our choice is either to be limited in our freedoms or to be imprisoned for breaking life’s rules. It may seem odd to say this during a democratic period of elections, but Jesus was not really concerned with our choices about social or civic leadership. He was concerned about our lives. So what’s the answer?

God gives us the only true choice. It breaks down like this. A) Being born just once will ALWAYS result in our dying twice, while B) being born twice (or again) ALWAYS results in our dying only once. That B) option offers freedom. The bodily death with option B) then becomes only temporary. However without God the second death is permanent. The answer for us is in choosing to be born again, a second time, there-in ensuring our eternal freedom. “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” 1 Peter 1:23 NIV.   “Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. ”” John 3:3 NIV.

While not knowing any better, we’ll work, fight, petition, protest or even die for our social and civic perceived freedoms but not many will make the simple choice to start life again with a new purpose for our eternal freedom with the only God who even offers us that choice. Like the point made at the onset of this writing, we have some strange ideas which seem to get even stranger with each passing generation. We are becoming further and further removed from the the truth. It’s difficult for those of us who have come to know Jesus to understand the natural resistance we encounter in messaging the gospel of Jesus. We can recall our own struggles and misdirection, our own battles, confusion and desires but we were somehow still open for a better way. To be behind the closed door to God, with no desire or willingness to open that door at any point simply does not register within our new consciousness and improved life. The idea of opening the door for a peek but then not living in that that world is even more difficult for us to comprehend but it happens thousands of times every day. God’s world offers the perfect neighborhood to live, grow and prosper within. It offers something even greater than hope. It offers promises from the author of truth. Freedom is certainly something to be desired but first we must understand what freedom actually means. Freedom is the ability to live beyond this temporary life of confinement and burdens. Freedom is to live and benefit fully from the love of God. Freedom in the truest sense guarantees us a tomorrow. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 NIV. Being born again does not separate us from this life, it adds a whole new dimension to this life. Given this added perspective, we are then free and able to make all of our decisions for the long term rather than short term. That changes everything.
