Matchbox Soul ~ John C Calkins

What is the value of the soul? This elusive, invisible, romantic unknown is perceived by many as a sort of eternal chamber of secrets, longing for it’s mate, yet which opens up fully, only for God. I was listening to the classic holiday song, “Oh Holy Night” this morning, when two lines of it’s lyrics suddenly lit up for me. “Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared and the soul felt it’s worth.” What enables the soul to feel it’s worth? This song suggests that the unique specialness of the soul is somehow activated by the presence of it’s creator. What a powerful and remarkable concept! It’s like a dormant matchstick which only ignites when it is necessarily rubbed up against a proper activating contrast. The matchstick’s potential lays completely dormant in a box, often with others of like kind, UNTIL the darkness or cold beckons it’s very special activation. Patience is warranted in this thought, because there is a time and a place for everything of value, for every one. For 5,000 years humanity prayed for God and a messiah. The Israelites expected (or expect) a “King”, as defined by their or our rules of structure and order. For Christians, God already obliged us once, but by His own rules of order, not ours. A king was produced but it would be another 30 years before this King stepped into His time and introduced the foundation of his earthly throne to us by way of the cross. Thousands of years of wishing, hoping and praying, only to be followed by another 30 years of waiting. There is a message here. Prayers are rarely realized within our timetables and the purpose of each life might lay dormant for many, many years. 30 years after a bright star and angel announced His coming we learned that, “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”” (Matthew 3:16-17 NIV). His soul felt it’s full worth from that moment on, after which He in turn would arrange for a multitude of other dormant or sleeping souls to feel theirs. Love was the first descriptive Word we were to hear to describe such a fulfilled soul. At that moment an unbreakable connection to heaven was established.

Has your soul longed to find it’s worth or is it just lying dormant, waiting for activation? I believe that the soul is our bridge between this world (natural) and the next (supernatural). The soul can not fully perceive of the next until the human spirit (gifted to us by God) is awakened to and enlightened by the voice and presence of Holy Spirit. That is the moment when the soul first begins to feel it’s worth. For Jesus Christ, His human spirit was being called forth from birth by God and watched over by angels. The baptism referenced in scripture was for our benefit more than, for His. We needed to be made aware of the breadth and depth of the gifts of the Spirit. Our soul is the intermediary between what our bodies perceive and what our spirit knows. In many ways our soul is to be the personality of our purpose. So no matter how “long lay the world in sin and error pining” (that’s us), until God appears in our life, we are open only to that lesser light which the opening and closing of the matchbox cover allows. The real light is to be ignited from within us, from our spiritually ignited soul. That requires us to be patient, open and receiving. Any of us can join the precious family of God in this special manner but not by just laying dormant in the box of our lives and hoping for the best. Perhaps this night should become our own “Oh Holy Night“? In the interest of this season we call Christmas, that we might better feel, “the thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices for yonder breaks a new glorious morn.” In the name of our Savior Jesus, may the soul of every reader of this prayer, be blessed and enlightened by the Spirit and may you each feel your full worth as prescribed by God. Share this blessing with loved ones this season. God bless and Merry Christmas to all.

We’ve now officially entered the season of eat, drink and be merry again. An annual period when our thoughts and actions drift toward our friends and families, our get togethers and celebrations. For some though, our thoughts go someplace much deeper, past even the bread and wine of the most famous supper. We think of both the good times and those times which we might might want to label as the bad. We are reminded that life is no bowl… read more

It’s not easy for some of us to think about God, life and challenges during much of any year, or to be thankful when life has been knocking us around and stealing our chosen sources of joy. The good in life too often seems masked or clouded by the bad. It’s much easier to be merry when the winds of life are at our backs, not in our faces, but easy simply isn’t when we turn to God. Good is… read more

They listened. You’re listening! THAT pleases One more than you can know!! FOR, when we listen, we learn. When we learn, we begin to understand. When we begin to understand, we start to know. When we know intimately, we fall in love. When we love we see, serve, sacrifice and surrender for that love. The difference, starts with listening … directly to God. Adam, Moses, Noah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Abram (Abraham), the Apostles etc., etc., etc. all have one thing in… read more

While we sleep, work or pray, miracles happen. But who, why and how? “Suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:13, 14 GNT). Even in the midst of such miracles, we often think and wonder, why him or her or me? What was done to deserve this? How can this happen? These questions… read more
