Relationship With God? ~ John C. Calkins

Why would it be important for us to have or to be in relationship with God? If just believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He came (here) and died in our place, for our sins, then what would be the further point of any relationship? It was a done deal 2,000 years ago. Wasn’t it? That may be the most misunderstood concept of faith and belief today and such misunderstandings carry the worst of long term consequences for us.

First off, we were created from the beginning to be in relationship with God. See Genesis 3:8, 6:9 and 5:22, where Adam, Enoch and Noah all walked with God. Such casual activities describe if nothing else, personal relationships. They don’t necessarily describe God or us, just the relationships. Jesus also told His disciples (friends) that when He left, He would send them (or us) a helper, counselor, namely the Holy Spirit of God to be with us (John 16:7). That’s about relationship, it’s not about governance or manipulation. Holy Spirit guides us but we still have free will. That’s relationship. It’s never been about us and God, rather it’s always been about us WITH God and God WITH us. Here’s the thing, if we perceive God only as the creator of the heavens and earth or the ruler of heaven, then we end up as being merely His subjects, the general population of His creation. That is NOT who we are to God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” John 3:16-18 NIV. We can’t believe in God the same way that we believe in gravity. The invisible force of God is a by-product emanating from the love of God. Love drove the creation. Love is the source behind the power which fuels the universe. Love is relational. Unrequited love is terminal. Eternal life is the ultimate form of and commitment to relationship. It’s bigger and stronger than marriage, legalities, even life as we currently know it. God loves us, He wants to be with us and He wants so badly for us to know that and to love Him for who He is, all He’s done and whom He sacrificed.

It’s ALL about relationship. So if we should choose instead, to walk through this life without sharing this precious gift of life with God, than how are we ever going to know and feel the depth of His love? The height of His commitments to us, to His prospective children? The relationship with God IS to become the exclusive highway to heaven. He already knows us intimately, the challenge has always been for us to know Him intimately. This can’t be accomplished by studying, praying or going to church if we have not already chosen to become a part of His church. The church is the Body of Christ. This Body, just like our individual bodies must be connected to God through the Spirit. Such a connection is called BELIEF and such belief permeates everything that we do and all of who we are. Relationship with God is a two way street. The more time we spend with God, the better we come to know Him. The more we listen directly to God, the more we understand Him. The more that we can find of ourselves to give to God, the more of everything that He reveals to us. We are not here and God is not somewhere else or for some other time. God is WITH us, wherever and whenever we are. He’s not ahead of us paving the road to make our journey smoother. He is WITH us to prepare and console us for the roughness of our road, in essence to love us every step of our weary or joyful way. If His love is left unrequited for too long, then terminal sets in, which is the worst of long term consequences. I don’t know at exactly what point “how long” finally becomes “too long,” but if you’re reading this, then you’re still within the available timeframe to establish the relationship. A relationship with God is the most precious, least risky investment and commitment that we could ever make. It’s also essential to a longer term relationship. He’s right here, begin a conversation now.

There exists a general, perhaps even lethal misunderstanding about the church or more specifically about the church which was referenced by Jesus. His church is not merely one or even many buildings. Neither the church as a structure nor any constructed temple by itself houses God. Believers no longer go to a church building to find God. In fact, quite the opposite should be true. We bring God with us into our church buildings. If relationship with God is our prime objective,… read more

At times it’s hard not to turn, look or to just run the other way. Each time that I allow my mind, body or soul to wander unaccompanied into God’s metaphorical garden, I see crumbling sidewalks, plastic flowers, artificial greens and tainted water complete with gardeners who are content leaning comfortably on their shovels, rakes and spades. This artificial garden we’ve substituted for the real thing is intended to look good but serves no real or practical purpose. I quickly… read more

Although our God is the rainbow essence of commitment, of light, life and love, there is so much more than we currently want to recognize and appreciate. We readily accept the pleasing portrait of wine and roses, of love, peace and tranquility but there is more in the background of this landscape framed portrait of a God than just still waters, green pastures, majestic mountains, beautiful visions and delicious treats. There is right and there is wrong. Our God has… read more

Good writers today are taught not to construct run-on sentences, but sometimes they’re necessary. The following sentence, although complex and conjunctive, really cannot be parsed out as a series of separate thoughts or sentences. It would not carry the same, necessary, inclusive weight of descriptive, essential truths. The Apostle Paul said this about God, us and love. “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints… read more
