Together With God ~ John C. Calkins

There exists a general, perhaps even lethal misunderstanding about the church or more specifically about the church which was referenced by Jesus. His church is not merely one or even many buildings. Neither the church as a structure nor any constructed temple by itself houses God. Believers no longer go to a church building to find God. In fact, quite the opposite should be true. We bring God with us into our church buildings. If relationship with God is our prime objective, then letting seekers know where to begin is important. Per Matthew 16:17-19 MSG. “Jesus came back, “God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn’t get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out. And that’s not all. You will have complete and free access to God’s kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven.””

The “keys to open any and every door” refers not to buildings at all but to God’s Kingdom. Certainly there is symbolism in the rock of the church reference, as well as in the “gates of hell,” a rocky location (Grotto of Pan) within Israel where those words were first spoken to Peter and others. The symbolism however is not the focal point here. The followers are the focal point. Although the disciples could not know it when these words were spoken, they would become the foundational stones of belief upon which Christ would “put together” His church. As His followers, this remains true with us today. The church is put together with people. We have evolved into the church of Christ. Later in Matthew 18:18-20 MSG more is revealed, ““Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this. When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action. And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I’ll be there.”” This is how we as the church should function. It’s not about being a good person now and becoming more spiritual later. To God, now is later. The buildings within which we congregate, simply make our get-togethers more convenient, more accessible. We are the earthly living prequel to heaven and eternity. We are the passage way, where the gates once symbolically stood. Jesus obliterated the barrier between heaven and earth. In His transcending way, He is spiritually connected to each and everyone of us who follow Him. Individually and even more identifiably when we are gathered together in His name. How is this? Per Acts 1:7-8 MSG “He told them, “You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.”” This is what spiritually constitutes “a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.” Then came the fulfillment of this Older Testament prophesy as recorded in Joel, restated per Acts 2:1-4 MSG “When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force—no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them.” God’s Spirit is privately with those of us who have opened our lives, souls and spirits to God. We are the rocks of the church, while the buildings are where we come to share God with each other and those seeking. Where we go to celebrate and relish in the unified presence of God. These buildings, without this resident presence of God which we so privately treasure are nothing. A sound filled the building but the Holy Spirit spread throughout their ranks. “And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I’ll be there.” No longer will God just be with us privately but then corporately as well. We are to become the welcoming sanctuary, the hopes, the end-resulting forest of belief which grew from the seeds of faith planted long ago by God. If there is to be a revival of faith and belief, it will flow forth from within the spiritually enhanced and it shall grow unobstructed in the gathered together, unified presence of God. Bring God with you into your church buildings. Immerse and melt your confining barriers of private faith and prayer into a productive, unified spring of flowing love. We should be carrying this, His church, with us wherever we go. This unleashes the necessary added spiritual weight within us and affirms that we are not alone on this remarkable journey. This Church, which Christ heads up is vitally important to the world.

Beyond Awareness ~ John C. Calkins

What’s with this new sleeping society of ours? “He got up from prayer, went back to the disciples and found them asleep, drugged by grief. He said, “What business do you have sleeping? Get up. Pray so you won’t give in to temptation.” (Luke 22:45-46 MSG). The temptation to sleep past the disturbances around us has plagued society from it’s very beginnings. It usually begins with just looking away, progressing into our firm denial of wrongdoing, which then manifests directly… read more

We, or at least I, now live in a spiritually sensitive, relational world. Not everyone does. One where we are acutely aware of the gradual, yet accelerating degrading of our own ethics and general morality. This is a trend cloaked in naivety rather than nativity. We believers, on the other hand, embrace the good and pray for the bad. Sadly, we have some very demoralizing outlooks, despite our focused thoughts and efforts to see the hopeful and spread the compassion and… read more

Absent any other relevant memories, the present times do feel like the end times. However, for those who grew up in other times (the 50s, 60s and 70s), we really do view the current times differently than most. We may have moved painfully past the War in Vietnam, the assassinations of the Kennedy’s and King and the Kent State massacre. Even the Detroit and LA Watts riots, the Chicago Seven, the Black Panthers and segregation but those memories still influence… read more

Having visited Israel early in 2015, I went back and read the Old Testament prophets again. What I witnessed in the Holy Land, essentially dictated this course of reaction. Read (Amos 9:13-15 MSG) “Yes indeed, it won’t be long now.” GOD’s Decree. “Things are going to happen so fast your head will swim, one thing fast on the heels of the other. You won’t be able to keep up. Everything will be happening at once—and everywhere you look, blessings! Blessings… read more

To each his own. How we live our lives is the basis for the outcome of our lives. We do not control each and every aspect of our lives because we do not live alone in this world. We can not control others. We live with others, so we must often share the burdens that they create and deliver. The sharing of both burdens and blessings, is the charge of this life, which leads each of us to one gate… read more

Oil, is it the fuel of progress, the luxury of consumption or the Valdez of disaster? We think of it as technology, commerce, business as usual. Yet without our natural resources, our subject of value, there is nothing. No employment, no revenue and of course no profit. I’ve come to understand that God gives us many chances, many choices and many reminders. God has offered us His very limited approval of debt, personal or public. Yet we, who are not… read more

Guide to the Future ~ JC Calkins

Many wonder how or why the bible is used as a guide to the future? Certainly Revelations is predictive, but for most people, the rest of The Book just seems like history. Biblical scholars, theologians and diggers spend much time and energy on biblical interpretation because they or we believe it holds many clues to the present and future. As always, opinions differ. We must remember that the Holy Bible is inspired by God. Not WAS mind you, but IS… read more
