Follow The Leader

Posted: November 29th, 2010   Category: christian

Even the greatest leaders follow.

In John 17:24,25 Jesus said, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me“. Often while absorbing scripture, to better understand, I’ll stop and question the Spirit within me, “what doesn’t that say to me”? For example, who was Jesus referring to by “those you have given me“? He doesn’t say everyone, or everyone who professes to believe. “Those you have given me” seems to represent a segment of humanity, those who follow in His footsteps.

Believers generally want to (one day) be among; “those you have given me, to be with me where I am“.   Jesus is about helping and serving others and if we’re still all about helping ourselves, where He’s at and where we go are not the same place.   If we’re still doing our own thing, when the time comes where we do finally look up to follow Him, we’ll likely come to the unfortunate realization that Jesus has continued on His eternal path, while we’ve wandered out of His sight and care.  In those same verses, Jesus says “…They know that you have sent me“, which gives us some further indication of who He is referring to. “They” are His followers, those who know and follow Him and do what He does.   God sent Jesus to us and while here He did exactly what God wanted. As fathers, we hold our newborn children close. As they grow we give them more space and over time we hope that we’ve set a positive example and that our children have learned to follow a similar path. When our children act like us, we know who’s children they are. When we act like God, He knows we are His children – the ones given to Jesus.
