Lands-Lord

Marketing firms are always searching for an eye catching promotion for their client’s products or services. There are a series of ads running now with blindfolded people sitting in dingy, dirty, messy environments who agonize when they remove their blindfolds and see their surroundings. Their surprise results from the advertised product having successfully masked the telltale warnings which their senses should have picked up.  Every time I see one of those ads, I think of the Holy Spirit trying to live within my bodily “temple”. Of course it’s not just the body, but the surroundings, sounds, thoughts, etc. which I  choose or tolerate that must be alarming to God’s perfect spirit. Behaviorally it’s easier for us to dismiss any connection to the Holy Spirit while we explore life in this second millennia following the birth of Christ. Yet the rules haven’t changed in this game of life. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 NIV). We have only 5 physical senses and perhaps some common sense to alert us to the spiritual threats around us, while the Holy Spirit within us must absorb the whole picture. The world is God’s creation, furnished with beauty, populated by His tenants. It’s on loan to us and we are suppose to be taking care of it and ourselves.  Yet we ignore the house rules, take advantage of our “lands-Lord” and expose the perfect innocence of His Spirit to our too often compromised behaviors and practices.  Most of us wouldn’t expose our children to these adult practices and surroundings but we don’t think twice about dragging the Holy Spirit along as we dismiss or disembowel His teachings in search of our individual pleasures.  This seems entirely irrational.

It’s not the responsibility of others to censor the imperfections of human behavior out of our lives.  As children of God, that responsibility rests entirely upon each and every one of us, individually.  We must understand that within each Christian body, dwells the most incredibly sensitive Spirit, with the most perfect memory in existence. This Spirit is our lands-Lord, who watches over us 24/7. There is only one reference of any merit which we can rely upon when our lease expires at the outer edge of eternity.  Fortunately, that reference embodies the essence of forgiveness. Jesus Christ took on that responsibility which we’ve shirked for seven millennium. Our honorable Lands-Lord deserves so much more from us.
