Ask, Seek & Knock

Posted: August 23rd, 2011   Category: Christianity, Common Sense

As a culture, we have many different names for those special slices of time where we can gather our thoughts, dwell in harmony, blend with nature etc.  We name those moments quiet, quality, private or down time, or for those who use every available waking moment, we might even call it “rest or sleep”.  Those periods certainly help us to align our lives within our collective responsibilities, commitments and pleasures.  They also help us to define our relationships with family, friends and associates. There is however, an even more critical slice of time we disregard or too often neglect.  Time to commune with God.  Distractions are another of the devils gimmicks.  The more we are preoccupied with the distractions of life, the less time we have left for God.  Most churches have a worship period, but even that can be distracting. The sermon or talk is intended to be a teaching and learning slice of time.  Getting to know God one-on-one requires a special, dedicated, recurring slice of time.  Getting to know God is also the secret behind a truly productive, enjoyable life.  Many have learned this the hard way, by struggling through each day, absorbing lopsided doses of the good and bad which life dishes out. Others, those who have mostly good days, don’t think about it until disaster or hardship knocks on their doors. When life is difficult, discipline works, when life is easy, nothing works.

When His time came, Jesus was one very busy man.  He was constantly surrounded by His chosen apostles, disciples, followers, searchers and seekers.  Wherever He went the people came to see, hear or even try and touch Him. Privacy or quiet time became a rare commodity for Him.  Life’s distractions drained him.  So he made His time with God, the Father, to gather His thoughts, dwell in harmony, and seek to refresh that which He needed.  Others watched him pray and commune.  We’d all like to assume that God simply provides, no strings attached.  This is what Jesus says: “And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (Luke 11:9 ESV).  Ask, seek and knock!!  Not sit back, wait and assume.  When you start your day, you probably bless the days of those you love with a; good morning, what’s planned and have a great day.  When you reconnect with your loved ones after their day and yours, it ends with; How was your day? What’s new? God loves His children too, it’s no different for Him.  He wants to hear from us. Find time, get to know Him.  Ask, seek and knock!
