HE Made Us Smile
I’ve never heard of anyone who chooses the bible for a good laugh. Of the things that God does for us each day, gut tickling laughter isn’t among them, or is it? Let’s start with the building blocks of life, DNA. God thought that up and spoke it into existence. Now I can’t say which one of those ladder steps signals amusement but I’m pretty sure God knows. Because laughter doesn’t require a cure or healing, it’s not a priority of medical or genetic research studies. Every hair on our heads is numbered (Luke 12:7 & Matthew 10:30) is the way that Jesus describes the depth of familiarity God has with each of us. God has given each the ability to laugh and the mind to identify amusement. In some he has broadened that genetic stair so generously that they can keep others laughing indefinitely with dozens of types of humorous displays.
Personally I’ve always thought it was pretty funny, when the Lord, without warning, late at night, came walking across the water towards the vessel that was carrying his disciples, (Matthew 14:22) scaring them silly. If that scene played out on America’s Funniest Home Videos, we’d all be laughing. It didn’t end there either, when Peter attempted to come to Jesus on the water, he began to sink, it had to seem like a practical joke for an uncomfortable moment. The secret that Jesus withheld until the right moment was of course Faith. Do you think Jesus was frowning or smiling as he taught that lesson? OK now we are traveling around with the Messiah, not just another guy, but the sun of God. One who was there before the beginning and is still around thousands of years later. We board another boat. A huge storm descends on the boat, all but one are terrified, fearing the boat will sink or capsize and they will all perish? All but one who sleeps peacefully while the boat bounces around in the huge waves and wind. Sleeping peacefully? I’m not doubting His calm, or even His restful sleep, I’m just admiring the classic timing involved. The lesson again was Faith. “You of little faith“, said Jesus (Matthew 8:26). Again I sense an amused smirk as He rebuked the wind and waves. If you knew someone who could turn water into the finest wine with a word, who do you think would be the life of the party? I’ll readily admit that all of what God has to teach us is serious, but I don’t doubt for a moment that the inventor of humor is in fact the fountain from which all amusement flows. We just don’t give Him credit for it.

Well, he did make us in his image. I laugh many times at things he brings in front of me…a sense of humor is needed to survive most of this life here.
Amen to that Sue!
