It’s Simple Really!
This may initially sound like a weak sales pitch, but when others wonder why we want to be Christians we must consider both sides of their confusion. For 2,000 years, the real followers of Jesus Christ have been maligned, ridiculed, persecuted, ostracized, mugged and murdered. It’s still happening today! You won’t find that promoted on any “Vacation Here” poster or “Fraternity Rush Party” banner. So what’s the attraction? Christianity isn’t a club, it’s a family, a quiet one at that. Christianity doesn’t promote a cause, it produces a way of life and manner of true goodness. It was never meant to be exclusive, quite the opposite, but it’s criterion for inclusion are tougher than the NFL, Marines and Special Forces, while demanding commitments and understanding greater than citizenship, Mensa and the most caring Hospices on the planet. Christians serve God by giving more selflessly than any foundation, religious group, country or continent on earth. Christians don’t intentionally destroy things, kill people, perpetrate evil or judge anyone based upon any abstract or fundamental biases. So I must reply, why wouldn’t we want to be part of such an incredible family? Being persecuted is a very small price to pay for being granted the distinct honor of acceptance. By expression or declaration alone, 2.5 billion people living today claim this amazing distinction, but fewer than 10% of that number will, in life, pay their price of commitment. Christians may not be the Chosen People written about in the Holy Bible but we are something more. “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:11-13 ESV).
Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew not a Christian. His Apostles coined the term Christian, to honor our Lord, Redeemer and Savior after many of his fellow Jews rejected God’s only begotten Son as their King. Choosing to become a true follower of Jesus is easy but honoring that commitment to Him is really tough. He did not come to us to be served but to serve. He showed us His way with actions which spoke louder than even His words. He again offered us what The Holy Triune first offered to the origins of humanity and he earned the right to do this by paying for our sins with his perfect blood. We want to be with and serve our God for eternity, alongside the living presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ, whatever the cost!
