Act Now
As a young man, I remember reading a passage that went something like, “the most difficult lesson that parents must learn is when and how often to use the word NO with their children”. It’s the single most difficult but beneficial instruction used to properly guide a developing life. Now some 30 years later, I can see so much wisdom in that passage. The differences between right and wrong can be very subtle or they can be bold. Laws are bold, they tell us of actions which are absolutely taboo in society, and if broken we will surely be punished by our peers. Then there is the subtle, but often more devastating acts of selfishness that we should be confronting. They tend to quietly creep up on us. Our attitude of let it be if it doesn’t hurt me has brought us right up to the brink of self destruction. The result is now knocking loudly at our doors. For the last 50 years, we’ve allowed our politicians to run free, unharnessed. As insiders, they better than we, could see the warnings written on the walls of this democratic republic. We’ve allowed administration after administration, to spend us into a false sense of happiness and security. Our American dream is to have more. More freedom, money, fun, possessions, comfort, food, more of everything that makes us temporarily happy. We’ve forgotten that “more” isn’t free. It comes at a terrible cost. A cost this nation (we) can no longer afford. Our elected officials have repeatedly chosen to ensure their own security at the cost of ours. They’ve spent our savings and sent us the bill. They’ve transferred our assets into their own private (not personal) government accounts. They’ve nearly bankrupted us, while gorging on tax supported banquets, benefits and absurd pensions. Enough!! It’s well past time to say NO to these selfish children we’ve raised.
As always, my thoughts on this topic are guided by God. “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.” (James 3:16 ESV). The idea of serving the people first, and then, only when they are safe and nourished, of graciously accepting whatever might be left over, needs to be awakened. Politicians are not our leaders, they are our representatives. They deserve less than those they represent, those who pay their freight, not more. “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17 ESV). The time to complain has passed, the time to act is here. There is only one selfless leader, the One under whom this great nation was born.
